Diesel cars outsold petrol models for the first time ever in Britain last month. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, sales of diesel cars reached a record high, accounting for 50.6 per cent of sales of new cars in July. The market for diesel cars actually declined last year as the fuel became particularly expensive and the Government's scrappage scheme made small petrol cars more popular.
